MAROOCHYDORE SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB
‘Maroochydore Lifesaving & Swimming Club’ was founded on 01 January 1916 under the ‘Royal Lifesaving’ banner, merging with ‘Surf Life Saving Australia’ in 1931. At that merger in 1931, Maroochydore adopted the symbol of the ‘Black Swan’ – now one of Australia’s most recognised Surf Life Saving brands.
Maroochydore was the first surf lifesaving club founded on the Sunshine Coast and the only Surf Club in the region to be crowned World Club Champions (2000 Sydney, 2002 Florida) and World Youth Champions (2018 Adelaide, 2024 Gold Coast).
Maroochydore SLSC has patrolled Maroochydore Beach and the Maroochy River Estuary continuously since 02 January 1916, on which day the first 5 rescues were performed. The Club maintains its proud record of ‘No Lives Lost’ between the red & yellow flags.
CLUB COLOURS OF MAROOCHYDORE SLSC
While Maroochy Lifesavers are now identified by the well-known black, white and blue striped cap, our foundation members royally waved a number of different coloured flags in the early years.

Over 100 years ago, the founding members of the Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club established the core pillars upon which the club continues to evolve.
TRANSPORTATION HISTORY
Trains and boats and…floating across the Maroochy River. Imagine the days where a ‘day trip’ from Brisbane to Maroochydore was near impossible!
AUSSIES 1961
It was an Aussies trip to remember to Moana, South Australia. Originally ‘Dodd’s Beach’ then ‘Boon Boona Beach’, the stretch of beach was renamed ‘Moana’, a Maori word meaning blue sea.
LADIES IN LIFESAVING
Women have always played a vital role in the lifesaving clubs of the Sunshine Coast, however their level of involvement has seen plenty of change over 100 years.

MAROOCHY BOATIES
‘The Swan’, Maroochydore’s first surf boat, didn’t get off to a flying start with World War II breaking out shortly after it was acquired by the club. Before being rowed to any National Titles, it was used to fish on the Maroochy River, and later, fitted with a motor and journeyed from the Tweed to Fraser Island.

THE GOLDEN ERAS
Maroochydore has celebrated sporting success since early members founded the organisation. Black Swans are recognised in the black, white and blue, but it’s the addition of gold that marks several prominent eras in the history books.
